Phenomenal New Music Ensemble

eighth blackbird was one of my first clients way back in 2001, so I was very excited to redesign their site for the second half of the decade. They keep getting better and better.

Incontri in Terra di Siena
Chamber Music Festival in Southern Tuscany

The Incontri needed a bi-lingual site to handle both their Italian and English-speaking fans. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to talk them in to flying me there for "research."

Actor & Writer

Petrea and I met at the British American Drama Academy's Midsummer in Oxford program back before I even thought about designing my own website. She's a wonderful actress, a very funny writer, and works consistently in the toughest show-biz town there is: LA. To showcase her two professions, I created two related templates, each with its own color scheme and personality.

Pianist

In addition to being an extraordinarily fine musician, Jeremy is a pre-eminent contributor to the classical music blogosphere (which is larger than you might imagine). I upgraded his blog (Think Denk) from Blogger to WordPress, and created a companion site (yes, in Joomla) to handle everything else.

Pianist

Amy specializes in new music, so we wanted a strong, modern look (thank you, Helvetica) that also had a little softness (thank you, Light Blue and Gradient Tool). Amy's blog is powered by a WordPress component that lives inside the Joomla! Content Management System. That last sentence probably made sense to only 3 people.

Package design and manufacturing

The Package Solution was looking for a very clean site to showcase the excellent design they wrap around various everyday objects. You've seen their work in Crate&Barrel, Target, and Walmart, and you've probably enjoyed tearing it apart later at home. They've developed packaging that's embedded with seeds, so wildflowers and pumpkins might sprout as the material degrades in a landfill, or your backyard.

soovin.com

soovin.com
Concert Violinist

The first site I built using the Joomla! content management system. Using a web browser to access the administrative control panel, Soovin can update all his content, including the automagically-updating concert schedule, and the photoblog.

Pianist

Jake's news/words page is actually a Blogger blog, that I embedded transparently within the site. This allows Jake to post from anywhere he has internet access.

Soprano

I took actual branches and laid them right on my scanner to get the effect of Amy appearing through the trees.

arsviva.org

arsviva.org
Ars Viva Symphony Orchestra

With some of the finest musicians in Chicago comprising its roster, Ars Viva wanted a warm feel for the site that would appeal to its audience.

clearspeak.net

clearspeak.net
Speech & Voice Therapy

Bold imagery and clean, clear navigation focuses on the personal relationships speech therapist Deb Kowalczyk builds with her clients. I also updated her logo.

Deb manages her content using Contribute.

jenniferkoh.com

Concert Violinist

We wanted a site that emphasized Jenny's bright personality and strong approach to her instrument.

iceorg.org

iceorg.org
International Contemporary Ensemble

A simple Flash slideshow on the front page gives a sense of the great music and art concert-goers will experience with this very cool group.

chicagosinfonietta.org

chicagosinfonietta.org
Most Diverse Orchestra in the World

The Sinfonietta speaks to a very wide audience, so we wanted a site that is both conservative and forward-looking.

I've also played with the orchestra since 1992.

piventheatre.org

piventheatre.org
Theatre and Training Workshop

Really two sites, the Theatre half provides information on Piven productions, while the Workshop half provides schedule and registration information for training actors.

lakeforestsymphony.org

North Shore Orchestra

Music Director Alan Heatherington was recently named a "Chicagoan of the Year" by the Chicago Tribune.

Tickets can be purchased through a secure form and a secondary site features the Symphony's Music School.

avschicago.com

avschicago.com
American Visa Service, Inc.

AVS's owner recently told me that they've had a dramatic increase in efficiency since launching this site, simply because clients don't have to phone them with the same simple questions. It's all on the site.

They manage content using Contribute.

screecher.com

screecher.com
Tony Arnold, soprano

Tony wanted a fun and playful site that plays against the "serious" perception of the music she performs.

A truly great musician.

UPDATE: there's a new screecher.com coming soon!

davebelden.com

davebelden.com
You're soaking in it right now

I do a lot of different, creative things, so I wanted a site with a coherent and predictable structure, but which also changes appearance from section to section.

I design web sites

When I built the first incarnation of davebelden.com, I discovered that I like moving pixels around.

I favor simplicity, clarity, and navigational ease, and I always try to imagine I'm a first time visitor to the site.

Feel free to if you're interested in a new site. However, due to current projects, I can't take on new work until July or August (2008).

Most newer sites use the Joomla! content management system. Clients can update their own content!

Wordpress is also in use for many of the blogs

Everything is handbuilt using:
CSSEdit (beautiful piece of software)
Coda (What can't it do?)
Fireworks (graphics, graphics, graphics)
Dreamweaver (some coding & site management)
BBEdit (additional coding)

With these technologies:
HTML & XHTML
CSS
Javascript
PHP
Ajax (a wee amount)

All working together happily on a Mac (I test everything on Windows, too)

I'm an advocate of Web Standards, but I'm not afraid to use <tables> when necessary
